ChatGPT Prompt Hacks (6 Examples)
There is no gainsaying the fact that ChatGPT is a useful tool that has come to stay.
However, in order to get the most out of ChatGPT, it is important to know how to interact with the AI model by writing good prompts.
Therefore, this tutorial will discuss some ChatGPT prompt hacks that can boost the quality of the results you get from the model.
Here is a quick overview:
Let’s get into the discussion!
Hack 1: Make Prompts Simple & Clear
It is often thought that ChatGPT does best when given a ton of information as a prompt. However, in many cases, a simple and clear prompt is all that is needed.
Prompt: Explain thermodynamics in two short paragraphs
Result:
As you can see, the output of the prompt query is good. We didn’t have to load the prompt with a lot of text for ChatGPT to give a good result.
Hack 2: Provide Context
A good ChatGPT prompt hack is to provide context or background for ChatGPT, which will guide its response or output.
Prompt: Write a catchy promotional tweet for a start-up firm that produces running shoes. Include relevant hashtags
Result:
In the above example, because of the background we gave, ChatGPT produced a context-specific response, which is exactly what we wanted.
Hack 3: Assign Role
Another way to get a good response from ChatGPT is to assign it a role. This is important to guide ChatGPT to give a response that is directly related to the role it is playing.
Prompt: You are a trained and experienced nutritionist and dietician. Can you suggest 5 foods to help a person quickly build muscle mass?
Result:
Giving ChatGPT a role to play enabled it to return a very specific response to the prompt query. It is a prompting technique that is sometimes used along with giving it a context.
Hack 4: Use Good Spelling & Grammar
Although ChatGPT is intelligent enough to understand a sentence even though it has spelling or grammatical errors, it is still very important that prompts are well-written.
Prompt: As a fitness expert, recommend 5 daily exercises that are good for wellbeing
Result:
A well-written prompt is important in order to avoid misleading ChatGPT and thus increasing its chance of hallucinating.
Hack 5: Give Examples
Another prompt hack is to give ChatGPT examples to follow. This method is known as few-shot prompting.
Prompt: Write 5 one-sentence jokes in the following format:
Joke A: [text]
Joke B: [text]
Joke C: [text]
Result:
As you can see, ChatGPT returned the results in the prescribed format. This means you can always specify the format in which you want it to respond by showing examples.
Hack 6: Run Several iterations
Sometimes, ChatGPT’s initial output may not be satisfactory. Therefore, you can run several iterations of the same prompt by hitting the “Regenerate” button.
Prompt: Suggest 5 possible male baby names
Result:
I ran 3 more iterations of the same prompt and got the results below:
Benjamin
Elijah
Alexander
Henry
Samuel
Benjamin
Liam
Ethan
Oliver
Jackson
Benjamin
Liam
Alexander
Henry
Elijah
You will notice that some names appear more than once in the results. This is because the process of generating a response is random, and so a user does not have much control over the result of each iteration.
