Article & Text Summary Using ChatGPT (2 Examples)

The use cases of ChatGPT seem endless. Everyday, researchers and AI experts come up with different tasks that ChatGPT can solve.

An example of such task is article and text summarization. Therefore, in this short tutorial, we will demonstrate how to use ChatGPT to summarize articles and text.

Here is a quick overview:

Let’s dive into the discussion!

Example 1: Summarize Article

In this first example, we will use ChatGPT to summarize an article from Wikipedia about the history of the popular German football club FC Bayern Munich between 1900 and 1965.

As a first step, we have to copy and paste the text of the article to the ChatGPT prompt. Then, we have to add our summary instructions at the bottom of the prompt. Take a look at the example below.

Prompt: “Summarize the article above into just one paragraph. Return the result as Summary: [text]

Result:

In the above example, we instructed ChatGPT to summarize the article into a single paragraph. The prompt technique we used here is called one-shot prompting, where we gave the model an example of how we want it to return the output, and it did a good job.

Example 2: Summarize Text

In this second example, we are going to ask ChatGPT to summarize a block of text. The text is copied from this article.

In this example, we first specify the following prompt instructions, and then we paste the block of text to the ChatGPT prompt.

Prompt: “Summarize the text below in only 3 sentences

Result:

Again, ChatGPT returned an impressive result, giving a coherent summary of the text and limiting it to only 3 sentences as instructed.

The prompting technique we used in this second example is called zero-shot prompting, where we do not give ChatGPT any example to guide its response.

Clearly, ChatGPT can be used to summarize any body of text. All that needs to be done is to provide it with the text, and then instruct it on what you want it to do.
